Functioning and non functioning Tumors- Acromegaly

DrJHO's site has a good write up on Tumors   http://drjho.com/pituitary_surgery.htm   I am keeping this as a reminder of Acromegaly- a functioning tumor   "Benign pituitary adenomas can be divided into nonfunctioning tumors and functioning tumors depending on the capability of tumor cells to produce hormones. Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas do not produce active hormones by themselves. Nonfunctioning tumors mechanically compress surrounding structures such as normal pituitary gland an

Pain, Pain Go Away!

Hello, fellow Cushies! I live in the upper midwest, where the weather has been less than tropical. Does anyone else have joint/muscle pain that seems to be much worse when the temp takes a dip or the wind is very cold? I feel like on days like this, the pain is so much worse! I am only 37, and really feel bad for all those folks who suffer from arthritis.

Dex test...

Right.. so Dex supression test is meant to have no side effects??   yeh right. I cant sleep, my heart is racing, i feel nervous.. my mouth is so bloody dry my tounge is sticking to the roof of my mouth. Ive been getting annoyed at anything and everything.. seriously, even the carpet nearly got it in the neck today.   Im reliably told u cant tell if your supressing or not by your symptoms- which is even more annoying since its probably all for nothing.   Gah.

Impressive words and other realisations

When someone says to you- 'i might have a brain tumor', i wouldnt say you would oftern think of them getting hairy and fat.. or, that its begnin, or even that its necesserily treatable.   When someone says to you 'I might have a brain tumor', your initial reaction is to think that they have a terminal illness. Am i right? Ofcourse i am.     On the other hand, if someone says to you 'I might have a hormone disorder'- well then you think of problems with sex and gender, masculin looking women

Results of MRIs; Next Steps...

January 7, 2010   I received the results of my pituitary and neck MRIs today... I met with my neurosurgeon and his partner, who have treated me in the past for the painful buffalo hump, and learned that I have a 4 mm microadenoma of the pituitary, which appears to be chronic and consistent with a previous stroke or trauma, and the cervical neck curvature has increased with degenerative disk disease, spread and compression of the facet joints, and a piece of chipped bone.   Prior to this

It's snow joke

I started out last week with such optimism. Monday, I got up early and decided to make the walk to work, leave the car at home, be good, face the cold and feel refreshed. It is a 40 minute work to and from and so will be an hour and twenty minutes walk a day. It was a bit frosty and I had to watch where I walked but it was lovely to get out in the fresh air and it did feel refreshing as hoped. I was a bit shakey when I got to work and also in the last stretch walking home but it was good. Tuesda

Reaching the Diagnosis Finish Line!

Well, almost a diagnosis...   I made some major progress today in the reach for the diagnosis finish line, which I know personally can take years. I have had Cushingoid symptoms since approximately 1990 and have never been able to receive a definitive diagnosis or treatment. Today, my FIRST-EVER brain MRI returned a diagnosis of a chronic 4 mm microadenoma consistent with old stroke or trauma. Unfortunately, I don't have elevated cortisols to go along with my new results, but with my sympto

Sickness before surgery

Ask your endos office if he/she has a standard letter that you can present if you need to go to the ER or call an ambulance. I have one from my endo though it is designed for how to recognize and treat me for an AI event.   Your endo should be willing to call in some RX's for you while you wait for surgery, whether they are hydro/cortef or something for anxiety like xanax which will reduce your cortisol levels. Have you talked with your doc about this?   If nothing else, you should have a pl

Dex test levels?

I just received a call back from my doctors office and they have referred me to an endo for cushings disease. My 1 mg dex test came back with a level of 19. What is normal? I didn't get a chance to ask her. Also, any ideas as to what the endo will want to do next? I am supposed to start my student teaching this coming Monday. I will graduate with my teaching degree in May. So far I am gathering that the most opted for treatment is surgery, however, right now it sounds like the recovery ti

My story

Wow. I am reading all this information and thinking that someone is writing my story already. I have gained about 100 pds in a little over a year. I sweat all time. I have headaches all the time. My feet swell so much that I can hardly wear my shoes some days. I have a hump at the top of my back that looks like I am storing up water like a camel or something. My face is so fat that you cannot see my ears when you look at me. I look like i could be pregnant with quadruplets. All of my we

Kims Bio

In case you didnt see my bio on the main Cushings page I decided to place it here:   March 2009   I was diagnosed in 1995 with hypothyroidism, after the birth of my son vie C section. This was my third Cesarean section. I knew I was gaining too much weight during pregnancy but no one would listen to me. I've had hypo for fourteen years now, with ongoing difficulties and no weight loss.   I became suspicious when I couldn't get my thyroid disease under control and started moon facing. In 2

Cushings and Dentistry

http://www.simplestepsdental.com/SS/ihtSS/...35299/pr.3.html     "When people with Cushing's syndrome or Cushing's disease have complex dental procedures, they may be at higher risk of infection. They also may be at risk of cardiovascular collapse, in which the heart stops pumping blood.   If you have Cushing's syndrome, it is critical that you tell your dentist or oral surgeon about it before you have any procedures. They also need to know if you are taking a steroid medicine. Your dentis

Need some more info please

Well I just noticed that the last blog I wrote was in June of this year. I am happy to report that since then there have been some MAJOR happenings. I finally got fed up with all of the tests that my endo here was doing without any results, so I asked her to please refer me to John's Hopkins in Baltimore. I had been doing alot of research, and they seemed to be an excellent place for someone like me to find some answers. Well I had my first appointment with my new doctor in August. She orde

Hmmm

Well I am feeling pretty good. I got to this before the week was up so I can technically say I have entered two blogs this week! Yeah for me! Of course, my friend Tami would probably say that is not very good. She is a daily entryer! How do you like that word.   It has been a good week. Despite the testing I had to do...and waiting..(still) for the testing to come back..I had a lot of fun! I rode a horse for the first time in eons. That was fun! Made me wish it could be a daily occur

Back after a Long Time

I have no idea what I am doing here, but thought I would at least say hello. Last year I went bananas before Christmas from my OCD which I hate with a passion. I never did find out what was wrong because I never followed up on tests. I just turned 33 this past August. I cannot believe it had already been almost a year or so since I had been on here posting. Maybe this next year will be more fruitful. I can always hope.

My first blog

Well today is my first blog ever! I used to write in journals but this may be fun. So it is Monday, October 12, 2009 and I am hoping to get my MRI results from Saturday today. The part of this Cushings I hate the absolute most is the testing. Waiting. Not my forte. Well, of course, I also hate the fluctuating weight and trying to explain that no, I really haven't been eating bon bons all day and no, I haven't been on a diet when the pedulum swings the opposite way. Of course, the weight l
