Medication Manufacturers' Indigent Drug Programs

Most people don't realize that pharmaceutical companies produce a great deal of written information about disease and treatment. They are required by law to provide detailed descriptions about the drugs that they manufacture, but most also produce more general information for the public about the diseases that their drugs treat, also.

In addition to this free material, almost all pharmaceutical compaies also have an "Indigent Drug Program", which provides medications to people who cannot afford them. Your physician must apply to these programs on your behalf, but you can call and obtain the applications and information yourself. Amounts and eligibility will vary greatly from program to program.

When I read posts like this, I am so glad that I live in the UK.  I have been paying something just under ?100 a year for all of my drugs.  Now that I have been diagnosed with adrenal insuffiency, I get all of my drugs free.  This is not just the steroids but the drugs for my other conditions  -  even, perish the thought, surgical stockings and should I ever need them trusses (are they still used?!) and wigs.  I've forgotten the complete list.  All disabled people get essential equipment free, for example, I have a manual wheelchair, an indoor power chair, grab rails in the bathroom, a shower seat, a shower step, a perching stool to use in the kitchen, walking sticks and other 'bits and bobs'.  Some are provided by the health authority, others by Social Services but all are free.

This is similiar to what I posted in Prescription Drugs in the Hospitals and Doctors forum.

There are so many programs available if we all knew how to find them.  Lynne even found some programs that help with transportation and lodging.  I don't know if she ever posted them.  Guess I should ask.  She found these at NORD, the National Orgnization for Rare Diseases.
