kikicee
Hello all! My lovely fat doctor - some kind of obesity specialist - has claimed that cushings does not make you fat. I'm on 1500 calories a day and still gaining weight so not sure he's right. Does anyone have some scholarly articles that disprove his theory?? Over 2000 Posts casperslove Posted December 16, 2012 Over 2000 Posts Report Share Posted December 16, 2012 Prolonged exposure to very high levels of cortisol (such as due to Cushing's syndrome) can result in weight gain. But honestly when you get a doctor that doesn't even want to do research to understand, it's time to move on. Many of us have been from doctor to doctor to doctor to find one that will listen. I hope you can move on to find someone who will help you.
Over 2000 Posts conti Posted December 16, 2012 Over 2000 Posts Report Share Posted December 16, 2012 It possibly doesn't by itself but the effects of it do in some cases. Not all Cushing's sufferers gain weight noticeably. Arguably the inability to tolerate excercise could cause weight gain.
kikicee
I thought that the change in how your body metabolises protein and carbohydrate, rapid uptake of carbs and the 'storing' in easy places (face, hump, belly) were a strong indication that it does make you fat. Stuck with this doctor. Endo is ok but this chap is, in the words of Malcolm tucker, a waste of skin. :-)
jesslp
I eat 1000 calories a day and still manage to gain about 1 pound a month. When I was desperate and ate only 500 calories a day I gained 4 pounds in a month. I'd love to hear your doctor's explanation about how that's possible. ...frankly, you need to move on to a new doctor. I once had a doctor tell me that gaining weight was normal because I was exercising and it was muscle that I was gaining. She also said that I could be dieting for a year or more before losing a single pound. She just didn't know what to do with me. She didn't know what the problem was and so she made up lies. Don't waste your time with a doctor like that. Scholarly articles or not you're unlikely to get anywhere with one of them.
floweroscotland
thyroid , cushings, growth hormone to name a few that can gain weight. What i have found is that eating very low carb and high protein can work for a while, but not long lasting i managed to lose 4 stone on low carb and still have all the other problems . It means that if you do have cushings or thyroid condition you have to work extra hard to keep it off .IM afraid that scotland is not the best place to have this condition i have been fighting for years for a diagnosis , i got so fed up of them saying eat less exercise etc etc etc , so now here i am had gastric sleeve a month ago, extreme way to prove i dont over eat , also before i left the hospital i gained 16lb in 4 days , almost had heart attack Bp and blood sugar high and low all over the place and still nothing, and no weight loss heavier now than before operation , i gave up hope with them years ago . anyway hope you have better luck jo x
kikicee
Hi there, get a referral to the endocrine department at the western infirmary in Glasgow. Are you still undiagnosed? @ jesslp - I got sent to an obesity specialist post my first pit tumour. Same story as you. Eating 1000 calories a day and putting on weight. Recorded EVERYTHING I ate for 8 weeks on an app and printed out everything for him. He said I must have forgotten to put down lattes - seriously I could have killed the guy. Also because I had told him I'm lactose intolerant and don't drink milk!!! Turns out my pit tumour is back but he told me that cushings does not make you fat, it's the increase in appetite that makes you fat. So how can I still be eating 1000 calories and still be putting on weight??????
jesslp
kikicee, your doctor is a moron. I don't think there's any other accurate word to describe him. ...oh, and the obesity specialist is just naive. The last time I talked to a doctor she wanted to put me on a fat blocker. I even told her I was eating 1000-calorie low fat diet. I guess she thought that was too much. The time before that I was told that people tend to eat about twenty percent more than they think they so and so I counted EVERY single calorie. I know the caloric content of stuff that no one should know, like the two calories in Diet Coke and the three in a packet of Splenda. I weighed my food by the gram, which in the states is unheard of. We usually weigh in ounces but since grams are more accurate I did that. Lots of doctors are seriously morons. It's like if you don't have a diagnosis they've seen a million times you're obviously a faker or some other nonsense. I really hope you can see a different doctor who is reasonable and will find a diagnosis that fits your symptoms and then help you work towards a cure. flagurl23
The elevated cortisol levels causes increased insulin levels. This is what causes weight gain.

mitsy1
Do not listen to those doctors; as others have said, it is a scientific fact that Cushing's makes you gain weight. I was undiagnosed for 18+ years and every year getting heavier. I tried dieting for the last 5 years of that, even down to 500 calories a day and I could only lose weight in water for a while and not a pound of fat would budge. So not only ill through dehydration but no success. Also I'm sure others here will have experienced not only doctors but family and friends who can't believe you are not secretly binging, and look at you as the sad, fat person who can't control their eating. Go to a new doctor and/or endo asap until you find someone who knows what they're talking about. Cushing's is a serious matter and if untreated can be fatal, so you must persevere. Good luck, all your fellow cushie's are supporting you. x
