SEPARATED TWIN'S FOLLOW-UP SURGERY COVERED BY MEDIA

For the first time since she was separated from her sister, Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez returned to the operating room for a non-emergency surgery on Aug. 29. UCLA surgeons scheduled the procedure to clean her incisions, inspect the scalp flap and make any needed repairs. The surgical team was led by Dr. Henry Kawamoto, director of craniofacial surgery for UCLA's Craniofacial Clinic, and Dr. Jorge Lazareff, director of pediatric neurosurgery. Dr. Irwin Weiss, pediatric intensive care specialist, provided an update for media following the surgery. The second twin, Maria Teresa, was removed from a breathing ventilator on Aug. 27. News of Maria Teresa's recovery after her third surgery received coverage during the week, with quotes from Dr. Andy Madikians, pediatric intensive care specialist. Outlets carrying the various news events included the Los Angeles Times, Daily News, Associated Press, CNN, MSNBC & wire, KCBS-Channel 2, KNBC-Channel 4, KTLA-Channel 5, KABC-Channel 7, KCAL-Channel 9, KTTV-Channel 11, KCOP-Channel 13, KVEA-Channel 52, KMEX-Channel 3, CBS Radio Network and KNX-AM1070.
